The Blues have suffered a major set-back ahead of Friday's night match against the Brumbies at Eden Park with All Black second-five Luke McAlister suffering a suspected broken nose.

McAlister came through 40 minutes of rugby for his club side at the weekend but a knock to the head at Blues training on Monday has derailed his comeback.

Blues coach Pat Lam instantly ruled McAlister out of Friday night's match.

"Unfortunately he took a knock and that's just the way it is," Lam said.

McAlister missed the opening four rounds of the season with a calf strain and now Benson Stanley is set to continue his promising partnership with first five-eight Stephen Brett.

The Blues are coming off a bye weekend and are 10th in the standings with two wins and two losses from four matches.
