The New Zealand Rugby Union board will have to grant Luke McAlister a dispensation if he is to play for the All Blacks in the 2009 Tri-Nations.

McAlister has signed with the NZRU through to the end of 2012 and will return to New Zealand in May after playing for UK team Sale Sharks.

Current NZRU regulations state a player must play in a competition in New Zealand before playing for the All Blacks.

All Blacks coach Graham Henry says he is yet to ask if the board can give McAlister dispensation.

Henry says it is a possibility they will ask for dispensation, but he is yet to think about it.

The Blues like their chances of securing the services of the utility back.

Another former All Black Grant Fox, also a Blues board member, thinks McAlister may well sign on with the Auckland-based franchise.

Fox says they definitely want him, he has been in the franchise before, he has played all his provincial rugby for North Harbour, and he wants to be close to his family.
