The prodigious talents of Israel Dagg have been scooped up by the Highlanders and the Super 14 rookie is set to play a starring role.

Plucked straight from Lindisfarne College to make his first class debut for Hawke's Bay as an 18-year-old meant that Dagg has always had an air of expectation.

And so far he has delivered. At just 20-years-old he has quite the resume: a star performer for the New Zealand Sevens side in the 2007 season along with three standout years with the most improved provincial team in the country has rightfully earned him a Super 14 contract.

His form in last season's Air New Zealand Cup was outstanding in a mighty Hawke's Bay team. He is a graceful fullback, a pleasure to watch with the ability to execute an overlap with shrewd judgement or if necessary - he can really put his foot down.

It was some what surprising that the Hurricanes didn't select Dagg but with Cory Jane seemingly having a mortgage on the number 15 jersey there, the capital's loss is the Highlanders gain.

Dagg can expect lots of game time too, he is the only specialist fullback in their squad and with Hawke's Bay buddies Matt Berquist and Jason Shoemark also joining the ranks you couldn't accuse the Highlanders backline of being boring.

In fact the Hawke's Bay Highlanders' look rather exciting.
