The Hurricanes are poised to name rookie first five Aaron Cruden on the bench for Friday night's Super 14 opener against the Blues at North Harbour Stadium.

Taranaki pivot Willie Ripia is set to wear the number 10 jersey when the side is revealed later on Wednesday.

Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper said he is mindful of starting a rookie first five straight away, as he did last year with now Blues pivot Daniel Kirkpatrick.

Meanwhile Hurricanes half-back Piri Weepu is looking forward to renewing his rivalry with former team-mate Alby Mathewson.

Weepu said that while they might be friends he will still be looking to make it difficult for Mathewson in his Blues debut.

The Blues side will also be named on Wednesday.
