Boozing in the Taranaki rugby team has seen five players axed from their Air New Zealand Cup match against Otago this Saturday.
Ace Malo, Ed Jenkins, Chris Walker, Jarrad Hoeata and Baydon Phillips all breached team protocol's following last weekend's loss to Waikato.
Taranaki chief executive Mark Robinson says the players are hanging their heads and it was out of character for all of them.
"They have acknowledged that they have let the union down, their team-mates down and themselves down," Robinson told ONE News.
"I'm sure it always hurts for any sports person to not be able to do the thing they love but it was a clear message from the team management."
All the players face disciplinary proceedings.
