Crusaders first five Stephen Brett is expected to sign a Blues contract by Friday's transfer deadline and be loaned back to Canterbury for the Air New Zealand Cup.

The Blues search for pivot looks to be at an end with coach Pat Lam also confirming Wellington halfback Alby Mathewson is joining the franchise while Tony Woodcock and Anthony Boric have rejected advances from the Chiefs.

Lam says while he can't yet announce Brett's signing, he has the attributes to fill the hole at the Blues.

The key is experience and they lack that amongst the players in the franchise at Super 14 level.

Lam is bemused by recent media reports linking the likes of Jonny Wilkinson and Juan Martin Hernandez to the Blues, insisting neither player was ever a contender to play here.
