Brisbane rugby league skipper Darren Lockyer will be on a high when his side play Newcastle on Friday night after his wife Loren gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday.

The baby, due on May 12, was delivered ahead of schedule at Brisbane's Mater Private Women's Hospital.

Lockyer trained with the Broncos at Red Hill on Thursday morning before attending the birth of his first child later in the day.

The birth will give Lockyer and the Broncos a boost with superstar centre Israel Folau tipped to announce on Friday he is activating an option in his contract to leave the club at the end of the season.

It was a big day for the Broncos with chief executive Bruno Cullen's son Scott making him a grandfather for the second time.
