Preston Campbell presented a compelling case to be recalled to representative football after featuring in the Gold Coast's thrilling 22-14 NRL win at Skilled Park on Saturday.
The Titans survived some anxious moments before taking the two premierships points after video referee Tim Mander disallowed what would have been a sensational try to Souths halfback Chris Sandow in the 76th minute.
Sandow's teammate Issac Luke unfortunately got a fingertip to the ball in a jumping contest with Campbell.
Titans forward Anthony Laffranchi celebrated his 150th premiership game by charging over the line as the siren sounded to make the scoreline a little more flattering than it should have been.
Campbell, who turns 32 next month, hasn't played representative football since he turned out for Country against City in 2007.
He would have to be a strong chance of making the Country Origin side after playing impressively in front of their coach Laurie Daley, who was commentating on the game.
And Origin would not be out of his reach the way he is playing.
Campbell served up two glorious passes for crucial tries in the narrow win that was in the balance until another old stager, Mat Rogers, scored in the 70th minute.
Rogers was the beneficiary of a Campbell pass as was winger Chris Walker who crossed in the 53rd minute.
Souths led 8-6 at halftime after a try to Luke and two goals to Sandow.
Campbell started the game at five-eighth but played fullback in the second half and the extra room brought out his best.
He and captain Scott Prince worked well around the rucks probing gaps in South's scrambling defence.
South Sydney led 14-10 after prop Luke Stuart charged on a short pass close to the line before Rogers' fourth try of the season put the Titans ahead again 10 minutes from fulltime.
