The Count of Monte Cristo is set in France, Italy, and several Mediterranean islands in the early to mid 1800s.
The central character, Edmond Dantès, is set up by his friends and wrongfully jailed for 14 years.
While in prison he befriends a fellow inmate, The Mad Priest, who ultimately helps him to escape.
Once a free man he acquires a fortune left to him by The Mad Priest, and then sets about getting revenge on the men who destroyed his life.
However, his revenge leaves behind a trail
of collateral damage.
