Steven Oates
Making a difference for lesbian and gay youth is the mission of Queer Nation's newest presenter. 27 year-old Steven Oates joins New Zealand's long running gay TV show.
He describes his new role as a chance to reach those isolated, young members of the gay community and to tell their stories.
"Visibility is so important for queer youth. It isn't easy when you think you are the only one out there dealing with being gay," says Oates.
Oates has been involved with Auckland's gay youth and support group for five years, and says he meets many young people who have had trouble coming out. It's something he can relate to.
"I grew up in a small town, so I know what it feels like to be isolated and how important it is to have role models and to hear other people's stories." Oates says.
Oates is well known to listeners of Auckland radio having hosted and produced 95bfm's Sunday night gay radio show Around the Bend for four years.
The new presenter also has theatre background appearing in more than 20 stage plays both amateur and professional. He has been in chorus, support and lead roles.
Oates also has Maori tribal affiliations with Ngati Rahiri Tumutumu.
