The Girl on the Top Floor

Stacey Reeves is the unseen, tragic face of the Christchurch earthquakes.

She was working in the Christchurch Press Building when the February quake struck. Its sheer randomness meant that a woman colleague on one side of Stacey's desk was killed, while a woman at another desk got out unscathed.

Twenty-four year old Stacey was pinned underneath concrete masonry.

She suffered multiple injuries - the worst to her legs. Before the quake Stacey was a part time model.

As Urban Search and Rescue personnel clambered through the rubble trapping Stacey, one rescue specialist pulled out his handycam, recording the entire rescue.

Stacey was eventually freed, and transported to hospital, where both of her legs were amputated.

It became an arduous journey of recovery.  Stacey was in an induced coma for the first couple of weeks after the quake.

Major infections continued to impede her recovery, but gradually she pulled through, and has since even managed to get married to her childhood sweetheart Nick.

Stacey, Nick, Stacey's parents and Christchurch Hospital allowed director Rob Harley an intimate look at the recovery of one especially gutsy young woman.
