Emily Williams

Second - Australian Idol 2005

Emily Williams (22) may not be a household name yet in New Zealand, but she is a superstar in Australia.

Born and bred in South Auckland, Emily moved across the ditch four years ago. She worked as a forklift truck operator in a factory in Inala, near Brisbane, before auditioning for the 2005 season of Australian Idol.

Emily was a favourite with the judges, who put her through to the top 12 in the Wildcard Show. She scored three of Mark Holden's "touchdowns!" for her performances of River Deep, Mountain High (Ike and Tina Turner), All The Way (Frank Sinatra) and I'm Every Woman (Chaka Khan).

She was voted by the public into the top 2 along with contestant Kate DeAraugo, performing in the grand final at the Sydney Opera House. Kate won the show in the closest percentage in an Australian Idol final, with only 1% of votes separating the two performers.

After Idol Williams was signed by Sony BMG, and formed the Young Divas with fellow Australian Idols Kate DeAraugo, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Paulini Curuenavuli.

The first Young Divas single This Time I Know It's For Real hit number 2 on the Australian charts and remained in the charts for 14 weeks. It was voted favourite song of the year at the Nickelodean Kids Choice Awards.

Their second single Happening All Over Again was another smash hit, going to number 7 in the charts and staying in the top ten for seven weeks.

The Young Divas nationwide tour was a sellout, and their debut album Young Divas has gone double-platinum. When the album was re-released in December 2006, it included an extra track I Will Always Love You by Emily Williams.

Emily currently lives in Melbourne with her boyfriend Richie and four-year-old daughter Asia.
