The Defence Minister has waded into the controversy over publicity given to Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata and the SAS in Afghanistan.

Wayne Mapp says he was aware Corporal Apiata was returning to SAS duty there and respected his choice.

"It is his decision. If you are a member of the unit you expect to be able to play a full part in the unit's activities, that's a reasonable thing to do and anything less than that would not be respecting his role".

Mapp confirmed to TVNZ's Q+A programme that Apiata is still on a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
