Trade with India is expected to get a boost following a visit from John Key to the emerging super-power.
The Prime Minister is travelling to Mumbai and New Delhi to negotiate a multi-billion dollar free trade agreement.
Educational ties are also on the agenda.
Nearly 12,000 Indian students are enrolled in tertiary education in New Zealand, making India our third largest educational market.
ONE News understands that Key will use the trip to announce funding to encourage student and teacher exchanges and joint research.
AUT Vice Chancellor Derek McCormack says that Indian university students bring in over $1 billion a year in tuition fees and living expenses.
"They are very big business."
With a population of 1.2 billion and rising trade with India is set to be big.
The large population means that even niche products can provide big profits.
Among those hoping to benefit are meat product exporters ANZCO Foods.
They export sheep pelts and cattle hides to India but beef exports are banned for religious reasons. That's something the company is hoping will change.
Graeme Harrison says that even though 80% of the country is Hindu there are still a large number of potential beef eaters.
"We are hoping a small part of it will come our way."
Key's visit is the first by a New Zealand Prime Minister in seven years. And like his predecessor Key's trip will include a visit to the Taj Mahal.
