One of the government's flagship job saving schemes is set to be discontinued.
Prime Minister John Key says it is unlikely the nine day fortnight initiative will be extended beyond the end of this year.
The move was one of the major announcements to be made at last year's Jobs Summit but has had a limited uptake, although Fisher & Paykel was one manufacturer to adopt it .
Key says with stronger economic growth and a fall in dole numbers the nine day fortnight will no longer be needed.
However, the news that the initiative may be canned has sparked some pointed criticism.
Labour finance spokesman David Cunliffe says the nine day fortnight was not a big enough response to a major recession, and that it is nonsense for the Prime Minister to say the need for the scheme has gone.
