A new government scheme aimed at getting more school students into sport is being labelled as "robbing the poor to pay the rich".

Prime Minister John Key launched the $20 million Kiwisport programme this week

But lower decile high schools say they will actually be worse off than they are now under the scheme.

Secondary Principals Association president Peter Gall it's a case of robbing the poor to pay the rich and that high school sports are very competitive and expensive.

He says it's ironic the launch was made at a south Auckland school when a lot of secondary schools in the area will be considerably worse off.

Gall says the funding his school will lose would normally pay sports coordinators salaries - but it's too early to say if those jobs are on the line.
