The Speaker has delivered a stern reprimand to the National MP Shane Ardern for driving a tractor up Parliament's steps during a farmers' protest last week.

Security at Parliament will be reviewed as a result of Ardern's actions, which have also drawn criticism from the government and Federated Farmers.

In Parliament, the Speaker Jonathan Hunt read an apology from Ardern and told the House the MP will be billed for the cleaning up of debris left on the steps by the tractor.

Meanwhile, the police have met Ardern and say they hope to wrap up their inquiry into the matter as soon as possible.
