Progressive Party discuss merger with Labour

The Progressive Party is preparing for life after Jim Anderton.

The party's founding leader has told members they are free to join Labour, and stand for it if they want to.

But Deputy leader Matt Robson says Anderton has not yet indicated whether he will contest his seat at the next election.

He says Mr Anderton is younger than the Pope and Fidel Castro, so the Party is taking things one step at a time.

Matt Robson says the Progressives have been in talks about a merger with Labour for some time, and have agreed not to stand candidates against Labour.

Anderton says he has no intention of retiring, but wants the Party's best to have an opportunity to serve in parliament.

Robson says Labour has agreed to the dual membership idea.

He says some of the Party's best people are already in discussions about putting themselves forward.
