Poll shows public service concerns

A poll of public opinion on public servants has found  61% think the public service needs to deliver better frontline services.

And the UMR survey shows 45% of respondents think it could be done by cutting waste and not giving extra money.

But 54% are not confident public service bosses can improve frontline services without additional funding.

The poll took responses from 750 people.

On Wednesday, the government announced that 130 jobs would be going from the Health Ministry as updated figures showed nearly 1,500 jobs had gone across the core state sector.

The government says it is about shifting resources from the back office to the front line.

National campaigned on reducing the bureaucracy and set a cap of 38,859 positions which included the core agencies and a number of others such as the Tertiary Education Commission. At the end of last year, the number of positions was down to 37,379.
