Labour MP Trevor Mallard is known as a scrapper in parliament
but this time a roadside tussle has lead to a police
investigation.
A motorist has laid a complaint against Mallard after an incident
that occured when the MP was riding with a group of cyclists in
central Wellington last Wednesday.
Mallard's story is that he was cut off, they both hurled abuse and then the passenger had a go by swinging a bag at him as he rode past.
The car occupants have taken the matter up with police.
Wellington police say they are dealing with it, but will not give ONE News details of the complaint until they have spoken with the MP on Monday.
ONE News has an email from one of the cyclists riding with Mallard who doesn't want to appear on camera. He backs up the MP's version of events and says he did well to stay on the bike.
"Buses behind, it could have been general carnage," says Mallard.
The MP says it's carnage that's caused by an "us-versus-them" mentality between cyclists and drivers.
Mallard has been shy of the rules before and appeared in court over a scrap with National MP Tau Henare at parliament.
He will know next week if there will be any action over the
cycle rage.
