Green Party co-leader, and sole nominee, Russel Norman has been officially elected as the party's candidate for the Mt Albert by-election.
Norman named Dave Clendon as the list member who would enter Parliament should he win.
Clendon is a former lecturer and current small business advisor, the Greens website said.
The by-election to fill the seat left vacant by former Prime Minister Helen Clark takes place on June 13.
Norman says he would be the underdog but Mt Albert was one of the party's strongest electorates.
"Our vision for a sustainable, fair, peaceful and democratic Aotearoa resonates with many Aucklanders, particularly in Mt Albert."
He said he would move to Auckland if elected.
"No matter who wins the Mt Albert seat it will have no impact on the Government's majority in Parliament."
Prime Minister John Key says Norman's decision to run was a boost for National, but realistically it had never held the safe Labour seat.
"It may see greater vote splitting in that by-election which gives us some heart, but I still think National is the underdog," he says.
