Despite calls from the Prime Minister, just 1% of New Zealanders plan to give their tax cuts to charity, according to a ONE News Colmar Brunton poll.

The poll asked Kiwis what they think of the two biggest changes affecting employees: Tax cuts and trading in holidays for cash.

For about half of the people polled, tax cuts will get soaked up on bills and essentials like groceries. Just over a quarter will save it, 4% will spend it on luxuries like holidays and 1% will give it to charity.

But the Prime Minister does not think New Zealanders are stingy.

"I think it reflects, for the bulk of New Zealanders, they are either going to spend their tax cut or ultimately save it and that makes sense," he says.

"But it's nice to think that those who don't have that outlet for their tax cuts will go and donate it to charities."

The poll also asked people what they think of the government's plan to let them swap a fourth week of annual leave for an extra week of pay.

Half say they would not cash in their annual leave, while nearly a third say they would. Twenty percent say it does not apply to them or they don't know.
