The Auditor-General's office has confirmed there are no grounds for an inquiry into any aspects of Bill English's housing arrangements.

A report found English does have an indirect financial interest in the trust that owns his Karori home, but being reimbursed for rental costs were not exceptional.

English says he welcomes the Auditor-General's confirmation that he correctly completed his declarations.

He says it puts an end to the issue despite hollow and vindictive attempts by the Labour Party to run a smear campaign against him

The Auditor-General's office also agreed the rules and administration of accommodation allowances needs to be made clearer.

The Auditor-General was asked to investigate housing allowances received by English in September.
