New Zealand's next Ambassador to Moscow will be career diplomat Ian Hill.

He is currently Deputy Ambassador to Washington.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully says we have a friendly and constructive relationship with Russia and there's potential for growth in the trade and economic area.

Ian Hill will also be accredited to Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tukmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

He's replacing Chris Elder who's returning to Wellington.
