National has taken a hit in the first major poll since the Budget.

The latest ONE News/Colmar Brunton poll shows National has dropped five points to 49% party support.

However, they are still well clear of Labour, who have not capitalised on National's drop, and remain on 33% support.

The Greens have climbed to 7% party support, while the Maori Party's support has risen to nearly 4%. The Act Party remains under 2%.

Voters still appear to back John Key as commander in chief. In the preferred Prime Minister stakes, Key is 40 points clear of Labour's Phil Goff.

Only 6% of voters want Goff to lead the country.

Despite the government's claims the Budget would lift economic growth, economic confidence has also fallen in this latest poll.

Fifty-six percent of people expect the econmy will get better over the next year, 18% say things will stay the same, but 26% now believe things will get worse.
