The new government is only offering minimal answers about its planned financial assistance package.

The initiative, now dubbed Restart, is aimed at providing support for people made redundant in the current economic downturn.

It was flagged as a priority by Prime Minister John Key during the election campaign.

Minister of Social Development Paula Bennett is not saying much, but confirms action on the issue will happen next week.

She is declining to say how it will be implemented, but Newstalk ZB is reporting that the Restart package will be considered by Cabinet on Monday and is likely to be implemented by regulation.

The package may have to do a lot to impress some needy families at the holidays, however - Labour and the Greens attacked the government's tax bill on Thursday and Friday for failing to deliver directed tax cuts to lower-income households.
