The latest ONE News Colmar Brunton poll shows only about half of people could name Phil Goff as the Labour leader as he tries to pull his party back from oblivion.

In political terms, he has long been the maid of honour to Helen Clark. Now it's Goff's turn to step forward, but there's a problem.

The poll shows only about half could name Goff as the Labour leader and 4% picked the former leader Clark.

To rub salt into the wound about one in every 100 people picked either John Key or Bill English.

And a massive 40% don't know who the Labour leader is.

"I am reasonably well known across the country for the work I have done as a minister. I am not well known yet as leader of the opposition," says Goff.

It's even worse for Labours deputy leader Annette King. Only 13% got it right and 2% thought it was former deputy leader Michael Cullen. And 80% didn't know.

The prime minister is loving it and Goff admits the new government is in the box seat at present.

Realistically the government does have a reasonably long period as a honeymoon, says Goff.

Now Goff's job is to crash that honeymoon to ensure Labour is not made bridesmaid again in 2011.
