The fight to win the Mt Albert electorate is heating up with both major parties now having selected candidates to contest the seat in next month's by-election.

The National Party on Monday night confirmed Korean born former TV presenter and current list MP Melissa Lee to take on Labour's candidate David Shearer.

Lee is confident she stands a chance in the Labour stronghold that was held by former prime minister Helen Clark for 27 years.

"Trying to convince the voters to vote for me will be a hard battle. But possibly I think they'll be very ready to listen because John Key's government, our National government is doing a good job and I think a lot of Labour supporters also think that, so that's a good start," Lee says

Lee has six weeks to sway the voters to vote her way, the by-election being held on June 13.

Lee was the favourite for National's selection ahead of other front runner Ravi Musuku, who has stood for National against Helen Clark in two previous elections.
