The MP for Mangere is fuming after being told he cannot be sworn into Parliament in his native language.

The new MP for Mangere Labour's Sua William Sio wanted to be sworn in Samoan, but was told by Parliamentary Services that he had to choose from either Maori or English.

He's been told he cannot be sworn in Samoan because of the limited amount of time.

But Sio says he isn't going to take the ruling lying down.

He says people need to realise that we live in a day and age where English is not the only language spoken in New Zealand.

Sio says Samoan is the second most spoken language in Mangere, and it's his right to be sworn in his native language.

However, he says if he cannot have the ruling turned, he will ask for his ceremony to be in Maori, just to prove a point.
