A senior government Minister has been punished for what has been described as drunken and rowdy behaviour on a flight back from a trade mission.

ONE News had confirmation late this afternoon that Trade Minister Tim Groser has been given a stern telling off by the Prime Minister's Office.

They received a complaint from a member of the public about Groser's drinking and rowdy behaviour on a plane. He was travelling business class back from trade talks in Dubai.

He has been told that because he is a senior Minister he should have had a higher standard of behaviour.

ONE News has tried to contact Groser who is currently travelling in Asia.

Political reporter Jessica Mutch says it is important to remember that Groser does put in a lot of hours of work as the Trade Minister and it is also public knowledge that his mother has recently died.

But, she says, regardless of this, the Prime Minister's message is that Groser is a senior Minister of the Crown, he was representing New Zealand, and this behaviour is not acceptable.
