National list MP Melissa Lee is putting her name forward to stand as the party's candidate in the Mt Albert byelection.
The move sets in place a determination from National to take what has been a Labour stronghold.
As a Korean-born former journalist, Lee is the kind of high-profile candidate National has been seeking for the looming byelection.
Nominations for National close on Thursday and Lee is considered the front-runner.
At least four people have expressed interest in standing for Labour in Helen Clark's former electorate. None are current list MPs.
Labour's nominations don't close until later in the month.
