Manukau mayor Len Brown intends to make sure Prime Minister John Key sticks to his word.

During the election, National promised it would give South Auckland 300 extra police if it got into government.

Brown is meeting with Key for the first time since he was elected this week.

He told Newstalk ZB he expects two thirds of the new officers will be placed in Manukau, and the other third in the slightly more upmarket areas of Papakura and Franklin.

Brown says he has been told there is a significant number of people wanting to join the police, and added that he wanted 300 additional police overall, and would be unhappy at the thought of taking officers away from other communities.

Brown also plans to outline Manukau's plan to curb the area's illegal drugs trade when he meets with Key.
