Maori Party plans for a trip to Fiji are being dropped down the priority list.

The party hit the headlines when co-leader Pita Sharples signalled he wanted to be part of a mission to Fiji to discuss the country's situation with political and community leaders.

Prime Minister John Key pulled the plug on the idea refusing him permission to go.

Sharples says the trip is now on the back-burner until they consult with more people.

He says they need to talk to more Fijian people and Maori leaders.
