The issue of Maori seats on the Auckland super city council is in the spotlight on Wednesday.

The first of three parliamentary sub-committee hearings for Maori begins at Orakei Marae.

The MPs are meeting with Maori at marae after many expressed outrage over the decision not to include any Maori seats on the new council.

The super city plan involves scrapping the existing seven councils and instead having one region-wide Auckland City, plus up to 30 community boards.

The MPs began hearing public submissions on Monday and will consider nearly 800 over more than three weeks.

Meanwhile, the team which will oversee the merger of Auckland's councils has been revealed.

The Auckland Transition Agency executive chairman Mark Ford has selected unionist and former Alliance leader Laila Harre, lawyer Rob Fisher, investment banker Andy Coupe and former Manukau City Council manager Colin Dale.

The region's next local government elections will be held in October next year.
