National has chosen Manawatu mayor Ian McKelvie to be its election candidate for Rangitikei.

McKelvie - who has been mayor of the district since 2002 - will fill the gap left by Justice Minister Simon Power who is retiring from politics .

He said he entered the contest for the November 26 election taking nothing for granted, and knowing he must earn the respect and trust of an electorate.

In the 2008 election Power won 65.7% of the electorate vote and National took 52.4% of the party vote in Rangitikei.

Power will move away from Government and into the private sector.
