Labour Party tops Maori poll

The Labour Party is the preferred political party for Maori, according to a DigiPoll by TV ONE's Te Karere.

A poll of 1000 Maori voters from the Maori and General Rolls found 34% would vote for the Labour Party.

The Maori Party had the support of 28%, while the National Party was considerably lower on 9%.

The Green Party received 8% of the vote, followed by New Zealand First and the Mana Party which both received 6%.

Ten percent of participants said they did not know who they would vote for.

While Labour took out the top spot for party vote, 63% of those polled did not know who the leader of the party was.

Thirty five percent knew the current leader of the party is David Shearer.

When asked if they agreed or disagreed with the statement "David Shearer provides good leadership on Maori issues" 28% said they agreed, 41% said they disagreed and 31% did not know.

When asked which party their local MP would likely come from 36% said the Maori Party, followed by the Labour Party on 32%.

The Mana Party had the support of 9%, and the National Party received only 5% of the vote.

The poll has a margin of error of /- 3.1%.

Meanwhile, David Shearer has been confirmed as the Labour Party leader.
