Prime Minister John Key touches down in New York on Tuesday, with the situation in Afghanistan and New Zealand's SAS troops there high on his priority list.

Key revealed just before flying out for America that 71 of New Zealand's elite troops are on the ground in Afghanistan , joining US and NATO forces in the war against the Taliban.

The Prime Minister will be addressing the United Nations General Assembly later this week as well as having talks with US officials about New Zealand's military help in Afghanistan.

It is the fourth SAS contingent to go to Afghanistan since 2001 but the first since 2005.
