John Key has joined New Zealand's top banker in claiming the
country is heading out of the recession and is getting ready to
launch various schemes.
"I think that tallies with what he has been privately telling us
that we're starting to come out of this recession which is good
news," says Key.
He is confident the worst is over.
"It feels a bit like that from an international perspective but the government has a huge task in front of it."
The news comes as the prime minister and his government get set to spend $1.5 billion on broadband internet access.
On tax, the government wants to lower the top personal rate from 38 to 30 cents in the dollar.
On education, the government will soon announce the Youth Guarantee Scheme, so 16 and 17-year-olds will not be able to line up to get the dole.
They will have to train instead. This is to help youth unemployment which has now reached 20%.
But Labour says the government is not doing enough to curb it
"We really need to put the gas peddle down and give New Zealanders a clear and comprehensive plan that they can work to. Key's speech on Wednesday was a step in the right direction but too little too late," says Labour finance spokesperson David Cunliffe.
A glimmer of hope, but just how long this will last is the big question.
