John Key has met with Iwi leaders for the first time as Prime Minister, at a historic marae in the central North Island.

Pukawa, near Taupo has been a stronghold for the Maori Kingitanga movement since it first met there 150 years ago.

On Sunday, business partnerships and water rights were on the agenda.

"If we really want to achieve better economic advancement, then we're going to need to address that issue and as I said, Maori will be an important stakeholder in that debate," says Key.

Key is also looking at making treaty negotiations a part of his own office of Prime Minister and cabinet.
