Prime Minister John Key has discussed the melamine milk scandal with the China's president during talks in Beijing.

A move by the New Zealand milk giant Fonterra to expand into China took a hit after its joint venture company Sanlu was shut down because of the milk contamination scandal.

Despite the setback, Chinese President Hu Jjintao acknowledged New Zealand has a role to play in farming and agriculture in China in the future.

Key says this is a strong signal the milk scandal is now in the past.

The contaminated milk in China caused the deaths of at least six babies and made 300,000 others sick.
