Prime Minister John Key met his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd on Tuesday night and discussed the Australian terror plot that was foiled by national security agencies.
Key said Australia did not need New Zealand's help at present and the plot did not show any immediate threat for New Zealand.
"It's a very serious issue that the authorities have been working on for some time," he told reporters after his 45 minute meeting with Rudd.
Rudd told reporters earlier that police in Victoria conducted co-ordinated police searches and four people were arrested.
A fifth person who was already in custody will also face charges.
The charges relate to an alleged planned terrorist attack against the Holsworthy army base in western Sydney.
The two leaders also discussed the agenda for the Pacific Islands Forum taking place in Cairns.
Key said they focused on a reported they commissioned into how Pacific nations could survive the global economic crisis.
The report was expected to show many Pacific nations were in a vulnerable position.
Discussions on the Pacer Plus, Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations, were also expected to focus on the role of economic growth and reform on helping those countries out of the crisis.
The Pacific leaders' forum gets into full swing on Thursday with an official welcoming ceremony. The forum ends on Friday.
