Helen Clark's chances of securing a top UN job are being talked up by another former Prime Minister.

Mike Moore who went on from leading New Zealand to become director general of the World Trade Organisation, is confident Clark has what it takes to control the United Nation's Development Programme.

It's the third highest role within the organisation, behind the Secretary General and his deputy.

Moore says Clark has a very strong reputation internationally because of her stance on trade, development and aid.

He was in Africa a week ago for the African Union Meeting, and says there's strong support there for Clark.

Meanwhile, the National government is also supporting Clark in her bid for the top UN job.

Prime Minister John Key says Clark's time as Prime Minister established her credibility worldwide as she engaged with leaders from developed and developing nations alike.

Key says it's early days yet, but Clark has shown the leadership qualities necessary for an organisation like the UN in such difficult times.

Clark told says that the position came up at short notice.

"It's a very senior position and will be hotly contested by a number of candidates," she says.

If she got the role she would have control of the largest budget of any UN agency at nearly $10 billion.
