John Banks has been confirmed as Act's Epsom candidate for the November election.

The announcement was made this afternoon at a press conference in Newmarket, Auckland.

Former leader Rodney Hide currently holds the seat, but new leader Don Brash went public with his wish that Banks, 64, be Act's candidate.

Banks submitted his nomination to be Act's candidate in Epsom earlier this month, ending months of speculation over whether he would do so after losing the mayoralty to Len Brown in last October's local body elections.

The former National MP and Auckland City mayor said he will be backing a John Key-led National government if he returns to parliament with Act.

Banks said last month he was seeking to return to parliament under the banner of a Don Brash-led Act Party because he wants to keep contributing after a lifetime of public service.
