An Auckland mayor is blasting Local Government Minister Rodney Hide over the way he's pushing plans for a supercity.

North Shore's Andrew Williams is accusing Hide of misleading the Prime Minister, and everyone else, about the shake-up.

He says the super-city plan is being hijacked and the ultimate aim is to take control of the region's asset base, and privatise it.

The government's now planning one central authority, with up to 30 smaller community boards.

Williams says Hide told John Key he's got support from the existing councils for his proposals, when in fact that's not the case.

He says his opinions are shared by the other councils, with the exception of Auckland City.
