Hone Harawira is explaining why he chose to meet with the Destiny Church last week.

He has written an open letter acknowledging his move has offended some members of his Mana Party and has been seen as an endorsement of the Destiny Church's stance against homosexuality.

Harawira said his visit is not an endorsement of the views held by Destiny Church and Brian Tamaki.

He said he went to the meeting to talk about values and principles, the potential of his party, the importance of Maori standing up for themselves and the need for unity.

Harawira said the Mana Party is an emerging force and isn't in a position to slam doors on anyone.
