Greens want pressure on Aussie banks

The Green Party is calling on the government to broker better deals from the banks for both businesses and home-owners.

The party says a Finance and Expenditure Committee report confirms that Australian-owned banks are not giving New Zealand a fair go.

Co-leader Russel Norman says the banks should be obliged to provide credit to New Zealanders on the same terms as they do for Australians.

Norman believes the government has plenty of leverage over the banks as it is underwriting them through its deposit guarantee scheme.
