The Greens are welcoming the idea of a four day working week with the government paying for the fifth day.
The government is looking at the idea of introducing a four day working week to alleviate job losses as the recession deepens.
The union-initiated proposal is likely to feature at next Friday's job summit.
If introduced it would allow a worker to work four days a week. The fifth day would be used to take part in community work or job training with the government paying for at least part of the day.
Green MP Sue Bradford says it would work well all round.
She says it's great both for employers as it will enable them to keep their staff, and great for workers as they will be able to keep their jobs and keep getting paid.
The Engineering, Printing, and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) also backs the idea.
"Anything like that would have to be in exchange for those businesses keeping workers on and maintaining their incomes, that's got to be part of the deal," says Andrew Little of EPMU.
Bradford says already some workers are choosing to work four days a week to prevent their colleagues from being made redundant.
