A report suggests the government has done a deal with Australia to get out of the mandatory folation of bread.

Until now, the government has been saying its hands are tied on the unpopular measure, aimed at reducing birth defects in babies.

However, the Sunday Star Times is reporting Food Minister Kate Wilkinson has reached an agreement with her counterpart in Australia.

The report says the effect will be to exempt New Zealand from the mandatory folic acid food standard, which the previous government signed up to.

Wilkinson is said to be taking a paper to cabinet this week.
