The government on Monday announced a proposal to open 7058 hectares of protected conservation land for mining.

Area protected under schedule four of the Crown Minerals Act: 26,802,100 hectares (including marine areas), 8,593,371 ha of public conservation land.
Detail of 7058 hectares of schedule four land the Government plans to open for mining:
-705 hectares of Te Ahumata Plateau (2.6% of Great Barrier Island or 4.6% of public consultation land on the island).
- Seven areas totalling 2574 ha on the Coromandel Peninsula (1.5% of total land area or 3.7% of public conservation land on the peninsula).
- The 396 ha Otahu Ecological Area and 68 ha Parakawai Geological Area to the south of the Coromandel Peninsula.
- The 3315 ha Inangahua sector of Paparoa National Park (8.5% of the park, not contiguous with the main body of the park. Parts of it are currently mined or permitted).
