Details on a possible shake-up to the electricity sector will be released on Wednesday.

Cabinet has been considering recommendations from an advisory group on possible changes.

The suggestions will be made public on Wednesday morning and Prime Minister John Key expects they will spark plenty of debate in parliament.

He says the group has come up with a variety of interesting ideas.

The government has been concerned about the steep rise in electricity prices and the friction between the Commerce and Electricity Commissions.

Their roles are expected to be redefinedm and there will be a view that consumers who conserve electricity in dry years should be compensated in some way.

The review is also expected to consider greater competition between the retail and wholesale markets.
